The
breeding facility at Momotaro is huge with almost 60,000m²
in man-made mud ponds along with the following concrete, heated ponds. Every year
more ponds are created.
Take
a look.
Each
pond has a layer of plastic sheet at the bottom that is shared with the ponds
next to it. A stand pipe is used as a drainage pipe. The banks of the pond are
sloped to allow drainage of everything. They are about 70cm deep and contain almost
40cm of mud. When the ponds are drained the kois are netted and placed in a mobile
tank, ready to be transported to other ponds. This saves time compared to the
conventional natural mud ponds.
