2006 - 2007 Growing season

This pond was started in late July 2006. The volume at 1m depth is 10 ton. The pond is exposed to sunlight from morning to evening. A piece of shade cloth is used to provide some shade. The filters sit on top of a platform at one end. The 2, 4 tier showers contain 75kg of bacteria house each. The pond is circulated by two resun 18000L pumps delivering around 30000L an hour. One pump is connected

to a DIY mechanical static filter which can be seen on the right (grey drum using static HSA media). The other pump is connected to a DIY retro fit drain inside the pond. A aerator is cable tied to the DIY drain to create a mushroom vaccum effect that helps draw waste towards the drain. This has worked marvellously well considering the pond is a flat bottom. A hiblow 80 is used to power the aerated bottom drain. FLow from the showers pushes waste towards the bottom drain. This pond is heavily stocked at the beginning of the season there were 28 koi. 8 koi below 20cm, 5 were below 40cm and the rest were between 40 and 58cm. In february 2007 the population was reduced to 18. The next few pages will display the growth of just a few koi halfway through the season more will be added at the end of the season.
